Local Spotlight: BMEx (Building Material Exchange)

What is BMEx?

BMEx is a Sustainability Society, designed to keep construction and manufacturing surplus materials in circulation across Vancouver Island. Think of it as a “matchmaker” for excess wood, drywall, metal, doors, insulation, flooring, concrete, fixtures, and more – connecting those with surplus materials to those in need .

Why it matters:

-Cost savings: Avoid fees and cut disposal and material expenses by reusing local resources.

-Stronger local supply chains: Source materials locally, reducing dependency on global suppliers and disruptions

-Environmental impact: Diverting building waste from landfills lowers carbon emissions and supports circular economy goals.

How it works for businesses:

-Businesses register for free, indicating whether they have materials to offer, need materials, or both.

-BMEx staff help identify and quantify available surplus.

-A free online marketplace platform, facilitates listings and matches for suitable exchanges.

How it works for individuals:

Through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, you can now donate usable building materials like lumber, cabinetry, doors, fixtures, and flooring before starting renovations.
This keeps quality materials out of landfill, provides access to affordable materials through the ReStore, and supports Habitat’s affordable housing work.
The ReStore has expanded its capacity to accept more building materials and has also just launched free Friday pick-ups from local job sites in Nanaimo. Donors receive a charitable tax receipt.
